Pituitary Pars Intermedia Dysfunction (PPID), also known as Equine Cushing’s Syndrome, is a common endocrine disorder affecting horses and ponies. It’s estimated that one in seven horses over 15 years old are affected, although it can also occur in younger horses.

Identifying Clinical Signs

PPID can be challenging to recognise, as its symptoms can be mistaken for aging. However, being aware of the early signs can help you seek veterinary advice. These include:

  • Decreased athletic performance
  • Changes in attitude or lethargy
  • Delayed haircoat shedding
  • Increased areas of hairiness
  • Changes in body conformation
  • Regional fat deposits
  • Laminitis
  • Infertility

Advanced signs of the disease may include:

  • Lethargy
  • Localised areas of hairiness
  • Loss of seasonal haircoat shedding
  • Recurrent infections
  • Neurologic deficits
  • Abnormal sweating
  • Absent reproductive cycle
  • Skeletal muscle atrophy
  • Regional fat deposits
  • Increased drinking and urinating
  • Laminitis
  • Rounded abdomen

Cushing’s Syndrome Diagnosis & Treatment

If you suspect your horse or pony may have PPID, contact us. A single blood sample can measure the level of the hormone ACTH, which is abnormally high in horses with PPID. This test is most useful for diagnosing early PPID if performed in the autumn. Donkeys have quite a different reference range and presenting signs to ponies – something to keep in mind!

If your horse or pony is diagnosed with PPID, Louisa can work with you to develop a management plan. The medical treatment Prascend is usually effective in managing clinical signs. With early treatment and management, horses with PPID can enjoy many healthy, quality years.

Cushing’s Syndrome Management Strategies

In addition to veterinary treatment, there are other ways to support your horse or pony with PPID:

  • Regular vaccination and worming strategies
  • Special attention from the farrier to identify foot abscesses and signs of laminitis
  • Clipping and regular checking of the coat and skin to identify hidden problems

We have contact Boeheringer Ingelheim to see if they may do vouchers again this year – if you’re keen, please email so we van get you on the list!
